What Is A Pointless Following?

The day you were able to unfollow people on twitter who do not follow you back was the day that a true following went out of the window.

As a social media manager, I stand by the fact that there is absolutely no point in having people follow your business just because you follow them. These people don't have an interest in your business. They are not a potential customer. All they want is a big following.

I see social media managers using this tactic on a regular basis. Is it so they can tell there client that they have 6,000 followers. My first question would be "But how many am I following?"

This isn't building an organic following of people who are genuinely interested in your product or service. You haven't taken the time to go through thousands of accounts on twitter to see who would be suitable to follow. You are just following the ones who follow you and then unfollow the ones who don't! Why would a window cleaning business in the Cotswolds follow a charity shop in Leeds?

It may look impressive on the outside but if you dig a little deeper you will realise that you are better off having 75 people who like what you do, like what you say or like what you sell.

I take care to create a true following for each of it's clients and completely understands that you need a following to sell your service or product. What I also understand is that 10 interested followers are worth more that 10,000 that couldn't care less!
